Where each one fits

Obsidian

Obsidian is a notes app that keeps everything as markdown files on your own computer. It is free, works offline, and community plugins cover a lot of what DMs want, from statblocks to initiative trackers.

It suits a DM who enjoys building their own system and sits down after each game to keep the vault current.

SCRY

SCRY records your session on Discord and builds linked pages for the people, places and threads that came up. Each page shows the line it came from.

It suits a DM whose vault stopped around session eight. Your players can read their own wiki without making an account.

Use them together

Import your existing vault as a zip and SCRY adds your notes to the campaign wiki, so you start from what you already wrote.

Export any time and you get a folder of markdown files with the wiki links intact. Drop it into Obsidian and it opens as a vault.

Questions I get asked

Can I import my Obsidian vault?

Yes. Upload the vault as a zip and SCRY reads the markdown into your campaign wiki. Single markdown files, Word documents and PDFs work too.

What does the export include?

A zip of markdown files, one for each wiki page, with the links between pages kept.

Will SCRY replace my Obsidian vault?

It doesn't have to. Plenty of DMs keep their prep in Obsidian and let SCRY handle what happened at the table. Export any time and the session pages drop into your vault as markdown.

Can my players see my imported notes?

No. Imported notes stay on your side of the wiki. A page only reaches the player wiki when it comes up in a session or you reveal it yourself.

Do my double-bracket links survive the import?

Not one for one. SCRY reads your vault and writes its own wiki pages from it, linking them to each other as it goes. A page you linked to will usually be linked again, but the import doesn't copy your [[links]] exactly as you wrote them.

How much does SCRY cost?

The free plan covers one campaign and three recorded sessions. Pro is $15 a month or $150 a year.

Does SCRY work for in-person games?

Not yet. SCRY records Discord voice, so your game needs to run in a Discord voice channel.
